SNAP-8 is an eight amino acid cosmetic peptide that reduces the depth of expression wrinkles by interfering with the muscle contraction signal, in the same way as argireline but with a longer chain. It is used topically in serums and creams for forehead lines, crow's feet and frown lines.
Overview
SNAP-8 is a synthetic octapeptide developed by the Spanish cosmetics ingredient company Lipotec as an extension of their earlier hexapeptide, argireline. Both mimic a section of SNAP-25, a protein that is essential for nerve cells to release acetylcholine, the signal that tells facial muscles to contract. By competing with the natural protein, the peptides are meant to slightly reduce the strength of muscle contractions that fold skin into expression lines. SNAP-8 was designed to bind more effectively than the six amino acid version.
The evidence comes from the manufacturer's testing. In cell and tissue studies, SNAP-8 reduced neurotransmitter release in a dose-dependent way. In a small human trial, a 10 percent SNAP-8 emulsion applied around the eyes twice daily for 28 days reduced wrinkle depth measured by silicone replicas, with the manufacturer reporting greater effect than argireline. There are no independent peer reviewed trials of meaningful size.
It is worth being realistic about what topical peptides can do. Penetration of an eight amino acid peptide through skin is limited, and any effect on muscle is far weaker than injected botulinum toxin. SNAP-8 is best thought of as a cosmetic ingredient that may modestly soften fine lines with consistent use, not as a needle-free Botox. It is widely available as a raw powder for DIY serums and as a component of finished products.
How it works
Muscle contraction begins when a nerve releases acetylcholine, and that release depends on a set of proteins called the SNARE complex, which includes SNAP-25, syntaxin and synaptobrevin. Botulinum toxin cuts SNAP-25 and stops the process entirely. SNAP-8 takes a gentler approach: it is a fragment that resembles the end of SNAP-25 and competes with the real protein for a place in the complex. When the peptide occupies that position, the complex forms less efficiently and less acetylcholine is released, which slightly reduces the intensity of the muscle contraction. Applied to skin over expression lines, the intended result is shallower creasing over time. Whether enough peptide reaches the neuromuscular junction through intact skin to matter is the open question.

Is SNAP-8 better than argireline?
The manufacturer reports that SNAP-8 is somewhat more effective at inhibiting the SNARE complex and produced greater wrinkle reduction in their trial. Independent comparisons do not exist. In practice they are similar and many products use both.
How much should I use in a DIY serum?
Manufacturer guidance is 3 to 10 percent of the finished product. Most home formulators use the higher end, dissolving the powder in distilled water with a preservative and a humectant like glycerin. Concentrations above 10 percent offer no additional benefit.
How long until it works?
The manufacturer study measured results at 28 days with twice daily use. Some people notice slightly softer lines within two weeks. If nothing changes after two months of consistent use, it is unlikely to work for you.
Will it freeze my face like Botox?
No. The effect is far weaker and reversible. It does not paralyze muscle; at most it slightly reduces the force of contraction where the peptide penetrates. Nobody reports loss of expression from topical use.
